Passaic, New Jersey
About
A rooftop restaurant and cafe built around a charcoal grill and a long mezze table.
Zoka sits above Main Avenue in Passaic, a few blocks from the river. It's a place to come for a plate of kofta at lunch, a late mixed grill with Turkish coffee and dessert after, or a hookah on the roof until the small hours.
The kitchen cooks the Levantine way. Skewers go over real charcoal, not gas. Hummus, muhammara and baba ghanoush are made in-house every day, and the branzino and salmon go on the same grill as the kebabs.
The cafe side keeps its own hours in spirit: fresh-pressed juices, mocktails, milkshakes from vanilla to pistachio, and tea by the pot. Kids have their own menu.
Book a table by phone for weekends and larger groups; the family mix grill and the premium mixed grill are meant for a crowd.
